College Drinking Age: 18 or 21?
chrokalrak ( Score Rank: #192 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) chrokalrak  |  will close on 01-Dec-2008 (10 days from now)
College presidents from about 100 of the nation's best-known universities, including Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State, are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws encourage dangerous binge drinking on campus.

Alcohol abuse by college students is a huge problem. Research has found that more than 40 percent of college students reported at least one symptom of alcohol abuse or dependence. One study estimated more than 500,000 full-time students at four-year colleges suffer injuries each year related in some way to drinking, and about 1,700 die in such accidents.

Will the law be passed in any state in US by Dec 2008?

Which 18 year old college kids don't drink booze? So, this legal age limit isn't too meaningful. Regardless of how meaningless the age limit is, I think lawmakers will stick to the original limit.

With all the drink & drive out there, I don't think lawmakers will want to lower the legal drinking age.

agree with black-shoulder. it's ill-logic to leagalize anything that is unable to be regulated. can our lawmakers be more creative in thinking something practical?

There are always suggestions that, when something is illegal, there is more of a temptation for young people for trying it. On the surface that seems to make sense, but if you flip the argument around, it means "make anything we don't desire legal, and people would stop doing it" there is just very little logic in it (not to mention the moral implications... can you imagine a state that legalizes murder, or another that de-criminalize rape?).

I don't see it happening. College students will be binge drinking regardless of the age limit. Heck, even high school students are known to participate in binge drinking too... do we then lower the legal drinking age to 12?
