Fannie Mae OR Freddie Mac taken over by the government in Aug 2008
Homer ( Score Rank: #74 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) Homer  |  was scored on 02-Sep-2008 (79 days ago)
You guys probably have heard the news by now. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which own or guarantee $5 trillion worth of mortgages (nearly half of all the country's outstanding home loan debt), are in big trouble.

They are losing confidence from investors to a point that their price dropped close to 90% since the beginning of 2008. How can they get into this mess? Found out from this Forbes article:
http://www.forbes.com/mar...

Now, they question is whether they will go down and be taken over by the government. It is highly possible the current shares will be worth nothing.

No. However, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the two largest mortgage finance companies, ``don't have any net worth,'' billionaire investor Warren Buffett said.

This is government bailing them out is what the market is expecting now. Hope no fellow users here still hold FNM.

Everyone is dumping their FNM & FRE shares now. I think they can survive beyond the end of Aug.
