Will any US Airline offers free in-flight Internet access in 2008?
Homer ( Score Rank: #74 based on predictions in the last 30 days ) Homer  |  will close on 01-Jan-2009 (41 days from now)
Many US airlines are now talking about offering in-flight Internet access for the price of $13 USD. Here is an article arguing why in-flight Internet access will take off. Of course the writer believes it won't be free.

The question is, do you think any airline will go so far as to offer in-flight Internet access for free to its customers?

Not going to happen in 2008. US based airlines are penny pinchers.

No way. The whole airline industry is cutting back on all costs including toilet paper.

You're a captive market once you get on a plane. Of course they'll make you pay.

No airline is concentrated on this issue until they can figure out how to deal with fuel prices.

I have to disagree with most of you. Add $13 USD more to the air ticket isn't that much. But telling everyone that your airline is offering FREE broadband WiFi is great marketing. Pretty soon, one of the airline will start offering free Internet.

We should realize nothing is free. If airline really has to make in-flight wifi "free", they either have to charge you a more expensive ticket or they will have to show ads continuously while you stay online. But then, that's impractical.

In 2008? Changes won't come so quickly...

And why WiFi? I thought WiFi will interfere with the onboard communication between the plane and the tower.

Free? Nothing is free. The airline will just include the fee into the ticket price.

But that's not fair to the people who just want to sit back and sleep.

No, running in-flight WiFi is not cheap. Also, people who needs it will pay for it anyways. So, why make it free? $13 is very reasonable.
